Overboarding
- New plasterboard is fixed over the Artex, then skimmed smooth.
- No scraping, less mess, and the old Artex stays sealed in behind the board.
Removal and reskim
- The textured coating is taken off or skimmed over, then the ceiling is re-skimmed.
- Any cracks are stitched first so they don't come back through the new plaster.
A word on asbestos
- Artex put up before the late 1990s can contain asbestos (it was banned in the UK in 1999).
- If your ceiling is that old, it should be tested before anyone scrapes or sands it. Overboarding avoids disturbing it at all.

Can you skim straight over Artex?
Often, yes, if the pattern isn't too deep and it's well stuck. Deep patterns are usually better overboarded.
Does Artex contain asbestos?
Older Artex can. If it went up before the late 1990s, get it tested before it's scraped or sanded. Overboarding avoids disturbing it.
Can you do Artex walls as well as ceilings?
Yes, textured walls can be overboarded or skimmed in the same way.
